5 Things Marvel got Wrong About Norse Mythology in Thor: Ragnarok

The Thor movies are a personal favorite among many Marvel fans (I mean me, specifically); they’re rich in humor and revolve around a very fascinating mythology. However, not everything they showed in the movie was entirely accurate! By talking to some 10th century Vikings, we were able to gain insight into what facts Marvel Studios got wrong in their Blockbuster film, Thor: Ragnarok.

1) Loki was actually Odin’s birth son

In old Norse mythology Loki was not an adopted ice giant, but in fact the birth son of Odin. This adaptation may have risen from the fact that Loki betrays the gods in favor of the giants during Ragnarok. Wild, I never knew that!

2) Valkyries actually rode on goats that screamed as they ran into battle

This is one really got Norse mythology fans riled up. In Thor: Ragnarok, the Valkyrie are depicted as riding winged Pegasus into battle. In actuality, the Valkyrie rode screaming goats into battle. When charging into battle, the goats would cry: "AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"

3) AK-47s were not around in the Viking age

Contrary to popular beliefs, AK-47s were actually not around during the Viking age. I mean, probably at least. Idk what do we know.

4) Bruce only has 5 PhD’s

In Bruce Banner's iconic quote, "How many PhD's does Hulk have? Zero. How many PhD's does Bruce have? Seven", he says he has somewhere between 6 and 8 PhDs. In Norse mythology, Bruce Banner only has 5 PhD's, a pretty stark contradiction.

5) Jeff Goldblum isn't real

In Thor: Ragnarok, Jeff Goldblum is the "Grandmaster" of a planet of all things the universe throws away. But Jeff Goldblum is not real, despite what people may have originally thought! This phenomenon is known as the Mandella effect, named after Jeff Goldblum, himself.

If you found any of these facts interesting, make sure to tell all your friends, your parents, and that weird cousin who keeps coming by the house asking to borrow your vintage copy of Bio-Dome by Pauly Shore, no Dave, I am busy, ask another damn time! And keep an eye out for Thor: Love and Thunder, coming to a theatre near you!
